I have always been insanely jealous of how Stanley Kubrick did his self portraits. They are at once wonderfully completely self-absorbed, playfully mocking, happily understated and totally unapologetic.

I wish I had this ability, to look at myself hidden behind the camera and take the moments of myself without reserve.

I need a new one, and it will not at all be as good as these are.

98 year old dobri dobrev, a man who lost his hearing in the second world war, walks 10 kilometers from his village in his homemade clothes and leather shoes to the city of sofia, where he spends the day begging for money.

though a well known fixture around several of the city’s churches, known for his prostrations of thanks to all donors, it was only recently discovered that he has donated every penny he has collected — over 40,000 euros — towards the restoration of decaying bulgarian monasteries and churches and the utility bills of orphanages, living instead off his monthly state pension of 80 euros.

This guy is so… awesome. Amazing. Inspiring.

Reading the news today, it was grim as usual. There are however still signs that our minds are alive, that poetry and music are alive too. People in Saginaw are still painting the lyrics of Paul Simon’s “America” on abandoned buildings in their town. It’s little acts of ideological grace in the face of another dying Great Lakes town that make me happy.

We are still thinking.

Nothing a simple action can’t fix, and while that is automatically doing its thing, let me optimize the entire archive system for use across all platforms and devices, while reducing the storage footprint too…

So Crispin and Fox Barrel (two cider brands owned by Miller-Coors) have these coming out in honor of “The Princess Bride” and they are going on the tappers Thursday at our local World of Beer.

I’m not usually a cider drinker, but that blood orange and killer bee honey one has me curious.

I’ve got to say I’m really surprised by the reaction the post about my reaction to Time’s cover on our generation has gotten. Here and over on my facebook page there’s been some very heated exchanges.

"I graduated high school in 2003, the year we invaded Iraq. Many of my friends protested, myself included, many more went to serve. Why? Mostly to pay for college, which costs on average 30%-40% more than it did in 1990. My generation fought and died just to get the right to an affordable education, yours got it handed to you." Didn't you go to university for free?

Interesting you went Anon on that question. I’ll admit I’m rather curious who you are, and of the people I know or have known who is it that only knows half of the story of my education? Way to try to call me out by the way…

Alright so, did I go to university for free? Not entirely, I transferred to Marquette University where my father is a professor after several years at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I accumulated a total of about $40K in debt from my time in college, which I am told is on the low end of average for a Wisconsin college student who went to a state school.

The main point of my post though were about how many people have had to join the military in time of war just to pay for college. I’ve known several that had to do it, went to war and came back with a whole host of problems. It’s really tragic to me what people have to do to get a degree. I’m betting if you know me, that you know many of the same people who have had to go through hell for college as well.
